French Leave Resort - South Eleuthera
French Leave Hotel was a 75-room resort in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera. It was built in 1957 and operated by actor Craig Kelly from Philadelphia. French Leave closed in 1970. The resort later became Club Med which was destroyed in 1999 by Hurricane Floyd. The remnants of the abandoned structures still stand today. French Leave beach, otherwise known as Club Med Beach, is known for its 1.2 long mile crescent shaped pink sand beach.
The nearby airstrip at Governor's Harbour airport had been widened and extended by the U.S. military to support their naval base on Eleuthera. This allowed for larger jets to make daily runs to the area. In its heyday, there would be days where hundreds of tourists would come and go to Club Med.
