Travel to Eleuthera is usually done by flying into one of three airports located North, North Central and South Eleuthera. Besides flying either commercial airlines or air charter services, you can take “Bahamas Ferries” from Nassau to either Spanish Wells, just off the Northwest tip of Eleuthera, or Governor's Harbour in Central Eleuthera.
Once on Eleuthera, travel is usually accomplished via car rentals. Don't forget to drive on the left side of the road! The main highway that travels from one end of Eleuthera to the other is called Queen's Highway; a winding two land road in reasonable condition with a speed limit of 45 MPH. Expect some rough spots when traveling in low lying areas due to the harsh environments. Be cautious on your first visit until you become familiar with road conditions - don't ruin your vacation! Side roads range from paved to “four wheel only” conditions.
Rental vehicles can be rented at the various Eleuthera airports and rental companies are supposed to be licensed by the government. Most rental cars age average 10+ years and car rental agreements are informal -- ask for a receipt. Gasoline prices are usually double U.S. rates. Rental rates vary from $50 - $75 per day with weekly rental rate discounts available.
Eleuthera Airports
North Eleuthera Airport (ELH / MYEH) is located at approximately N25.48° latitude and W76.68° longitude. There is a small snack shop on the premises along with a gift shop, several restaurants and a bar across the street. This is the busiest airport of the three. North Eleuthera airport has the most airline service from commercial airlines, air charter services and private airplanes. Much of the service has to do with vacation travel to neighboring Harbour Island which can be reached by a ten minute taxi ride followed by a 10 minute water taxi ride.
Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB / MYEM) is located at approximately N25.28° latitude and W76.33° longitude. There is a small snack shop at the airport and a nearby bar and liquor store. Governor's Harbour airport is approximately 7.8 miles north of Governor's Harbour and 12.3 miles south of Alice Town and Hatchet Bay.
Rock Sound Airport (RSD / MYER) is located at approximately N24.89° latitude and W76.17° longitude. Rock Sound Airport is just north of Rock Sound and approximately 6.3 miles south of Tarpum Bay.
